William Cooper and his wife Angela were travelling home from Paphos International Airport in Cyprus to Bristol on 25th November 2015 after a relaxing holiday.
“Everything went smoothly and according to plan and we boarded the plane on time. We taxied to the end of the runway on time to take off.” William told FlightCompensation.com.
“We sat there for about five minutes and then the pilot announced that there was a mechanical problem. We started turning back towards the airport not knowing what was going to happen.
“Once back at the stand, the mechanics began work on fixing the issue. Apart from the initial announcement they did not update us on the situation. We stayed on the plane and were each provided with a free hot drink but no food or other refreshments.”
Sat on the plane for two hours…
After two hours of being sat on the aircraft, the pilot announced that the issue had been fixed and that they were good to go…
“The pilot went on to say that because the crew had exceeded their working hours during the delay, they would not be able to fly us directly back to Bristol.
“They were going to fly us to Berlin first to pick up a new crew and then head to Bristol from there.
“We were already on the plane and there was no other option but to go to Berlin first.”
The couple eventually arrived in Bristol four hours later than scheduled.
“When we arrived back into the UK it was late and we had to drive during the night for a number of hours from Bristol to Devon. We have never been delayed to this extent.”
“I didn’t realise we could get as much as we did”
“Once home, the flight delay was always in the back of my mind but I didn’t do anything about it for around six months. I didn’t realise we could get as much as we did. I thought it would only be a small amount and therefore a hassle claiming compensation from easyJet for it.”
